Showing up to the site with all the news vans parked outside was like walking right into a zoo. The minute I arrived, parking my truck in the lot, they descended upon me with their cameras and flashing lights, throwing out question after question.

“What was the cause of the fire today, Mr. Romano? Was it an electrical issue?”

“Was this caused by neglect, Romano?”

“How do you think this will affect your campaign, Romano?”

I ignored the questions, moving decidedly through the throng as I headed toward the entrance of the now charred structure.

Once I got there, Santiago threw open the doors and glared at the crowd behind me.

“Get out of here, you damn vultures, dang,” he yelled, forcing them back and slamming the door. I walked up the stairs, looking for the electrical engineer turned arson investigator, Emerson. I found the short, stout man by the charred breaker box, inspecting it with a probe.

“What’s the cause of the fire?” I asked in place of a greeting.

Emerson pursed his lips. “It does look like a wiring fault. But I’m not sure that’s all it is.”

“What do you mean?”

“It looks like the wires were cut intentionally,” he said. “I can’t say so for sure, but the angles at which they were cut were far too clean, and there was a slight smell of gasoline where I came in.

“It’s that Grayson bastard,” Santiago growled as he walked up behind us. “I can smell his slimy hands all over this.”

Emerson nodded his agreement, continuing to inspect the burnt remains.

“Was anybody hurt?” I asked.

“No,” Santiago said. “Luckily, the fire was pretty contained, and none of the tenants were in the house at the time, so nobody got hurt. The fire department also got here right on time to prevent it from becoming a bigger inferno, but by the time they got here, the news reporters were already here. And Grayson, of course, is playing the good samaritan all over social media, saying he will give each family some stipend and provide housing for them for free while you deal with your ‘little problem.’ The absolute fucking gall of this man.”

I thought about all of it. It seemed like a bat-shit crazy thing to do, but I knew that men did things out of power a lot of the time. I had thought that maybe my father exaggerated about Grayson, but now I could see he had a real reason to be uneasy about the man. To hurt people and their livelihood because of politics took it to a whole new level that I had not imagined he would stoop to.

But now that I knew, it was time to put a stop to this. It was time to talk to Greg Grayson.
